TLDR
- Over about three weeks this year I researched a dozen tools for this site: two email platforms, a publishing platform, two keyword tools, two SEO suites, a YouTube plugin, an AI publisher, an affiliate program, an auto-poster, a side-hustle app, and one “viral business idea”.
- Every one closed with the same verdict: not now. Then I wrote, and the posts shipped.
- The bottleneck was creation. I kept shopping for distribution, because shopping feels like work and writing feels like exposure.
- The question I ask now before any tool: creation or distribution? If there’s nothing to distribute yet, the answer is no.
- It’s the same question that stops people getting a first client. They build the website, the logo, the company. The first client needs a phone and some nerve.
I have a folder of tools I nearly bought this year. It’s a long folder.
Two email platforms, because the one I had felt limiting. A publishing platform, because the audience was “already there”. Two keyword tools and two SEO suites, because I wanted to know what to write before I wrote it. A YouTube plugin. An AI tool that would publish for me. A hosting affiliate programme. An app that would post to X on a schedule. A side-hustle app. And one “viral business idea” that arrived in my inbox and took an evening.
About three weeks, all in. I evaluated every one properly: pricing, features, who else used it, what it would replace. And every single one closed with the same verdict. Not now.
Then I stopped researching and wrote. The posts shipped.
What I was actually doing
I told myself I was solving distribution. The site had almost no readers, so the problem was obviously reach, so the fix was obviously a better tool for reach.
Except the site had almost no posts either. There was nothing to distribute. I was buying a bigger truck for an empty warehouse.
Shopping for tools feels like work. It has tabs and comparisons and a decision at the end. It’s measurable, it’s finite, and it can’t be judged by anyone, because nobody reads your tool research. Writing a post can be judged. It goes out with your name on it. So the mind, which is lazy and clever, finds a way to do the thing that feels like progress and risks nothing.
That’s all it was. Three weeks of avoiding exposure, dressed up as diligence.
The one question
Now, before I buy or switch anything, one question: is this creation or distribution?
If it’s distribution and there’s nothing to distribute, no. If it’s creation, the next question is whether it removes a step I actually do, every week, that stops me making the thing. Those tools I buy quickly. There aren’t many.
The honest ratio, for a site like this, is something like ninety per cent creation. The audience arrives when there’s something to arrive at. Tools don’t fix that, and the search for them is the most comfortable way I’ve found to not do the work.
The same trap, with a first client
I bring this up because I watch people do the exact same thing with their first business, and it costs them more than three weeks.
They want to sell their skill outside the job. So they build the website. They get a logo done. They register the company, open the bank account, set up the booking system, pick the invoicing software. Six months pass. They have a beautiful shop and no customers, because every one of those things is distribution for a product that doesn’t exist yet. The product is a client who paid.
In 2008 I resigned and went freelance. My first month came to $4,800, against the $1,700 salary I’d left. No website, no logo, no booking system. The website came later, with the first clinic.
The first client is creation. Everything you’d rather do first is distribution.
What to do with this
Write down the thing you’ve been researching instead of making. The tool, the platform, the setup. Then write down what you’d have if you’d spent those hours on the thing itself. Usually it’s a post, or a client, or a conversation you’ve been avoiding.
If you’re at the start, no business yet, open the calculator and put a modest second income into it. Look at what it does to your date. Then go and make the one phone call that income starts with.
