This site is run by me, Nigel Chua, from Singapore. Here is what it collects about you, why, and how to get it removed. The short version: an email address if you subscribe, ordinary visitor statistics, and nothing I sell or trade.

What I collect, and why

The newsletter. When you subscribe, I keep your email address, a first name if you give one, and your answer to any question on the form (for example, whether you own a business) so I can send you the right letters. The list runs on Kit (kit.com), which stores it on my behalf. Every email has an unsubscribe link. Use it and you are off the list; nothing else happens.

The calculator. Everything you type into the Freedom Date calculator stays in your browser. The maths runs on your device. Nothing you enter is sent to me or to anyone else.

Comments. If you comment on a post, I keep the comment, the name and email you give, and your IP address, which WordPress records to catch spam. An anonymised hash of your email may be sent to Gravatar to show a profile picture if you have one. A comment stays up as long as the post does; ask and I will remove it.

Email you send me. Kept as ordinary correspondence, read by me, shared with nobody.

Analytics and cookies

I use Google Analytics to see which pages are read and where readers come from. It is aggregate: I see that a page was read, not who read it. Google sets cookies to do this and handles the data under its own privacy policy; you can block it with Google’s opt-out add-on or a browser setting.

WordPress sets a cookie only if you comment and tick the box to remember your details, and when someone logs in — readers never log in. Short redirect links on this site (nigelchua.com/something) count how many times they are clicked.

No advertising networks. No ad cookies. No selling, renting or trading of anything above.

Who else handles it

Four companies touch this data so the site can run, each under its own policy: Hostinger (hosting; its servers log visits, including IP addresses, for security), Kit (the newsletter), Google (analytics and Search Console), and Gravatar (comment pictures). Embedded content such as a YouTube video behaves as if you had visited that site directly.

How long I keep it

Your subscription until you unsubscribe or ask me to delete it. Comments as long as the post is up. Server logs for the hosting company’s standard period. Correspondence as long as it is useful.

Your rights

You can ask what I hold about you, ask me to correct it, or ask me to delete it. Email me through the contact page and I will do it, unless something has to be kept for a legal or security reason, in which case I will tell you what and why. I am in Singapore, so the Personal Data Protection Act applies to me; wherever you are, the answer to “please delete it” is the same.

Children

This site is written for adults. I do not knowingly collect anything from anyone under 18. If you think I have, tell me and I will delete it.

Changes

If any of this changes, this page changes and the date at the top moves.
