Two Kids Rotavirus Hospitalization in September 2024

Looking outside of Gleneagles Hospital

September 2024 was a little tiring.

It started with our youngest kiddo having bouts of soft stool/poop, but as he was still active and can eat and stay hydrated, so we didnt have to take him to see a doctor even.

Just probiotics and hydrating will suffice.

But the trouble came when the oldest kid caught it - she was projectile vomiting and uncontrollable diarrhea. To make things worse, she couldnt keep her foods and liquids down, everything just came out quickly.

These symptoms needed medical attention, so we got her to the hospital and she was warded from 13 to 17 September. It was okay as we went to the hospital at about 9 PM or maybe 10 PM, but we're still okay. We were warded at around 1 AM and slept around 3 AM+.

Me and my wife decided that I would stay in the hospital to take care of the oldest kid, and wifey would stay at home to take care of the 2 boys.

I had many occurrences of washing clothing stained with diarrhea and disrupted sleep (the multiple BP and temperature checks as well as the medicine times), but of course it wasnt easy for my wife too to handle the kids at home for food, school, sleep etc.

So by the time the oldest was discharged, wifey and I were quite tired already, plus my back was getting sore.

But...of course, by then my 2nd kid AND my wife caught the bug, both starting to projectile diarrhea and vomit. Within 24 hours of my 1st kid being discharged, I took the 2nd kid to hospital to get treatment.

Second Hospitalization

This one was tougher, as we hopped on the car to the hospital at 3 AM+, to Mount Elizabeth Novena like where the first one had went. It was tougher not only because it's much later, but also the 2nd kid's symptoms were much more intense, both diarrhea and vomiting wise.

We had to put him on diapers and bring a vomit bag which he had used the vomit bag at least 2 times and had changed diapers at least 3 times.

The challenge was Mount Elizabeth Novena did not have beds, so we couldnt ward him there, and we needed to take another transport to Gleneagles Hospital, now at 4+ in the morning, as there were beds there.

By the time we got settled into the ward, it was 5+ in the morning and after settling him in, it was 6+ AM before I could take a nap. The doctor came at 7+, 8 AM and boy, it was tiring that day.

I Started To Get Nausea, Stomach Pains

This wasnt looking good.

Throughout all these time, I didnt (or hadnt) caught the rotavirus, kinda like the last one standing.

Normally if everyone fell sick, it's just a matter of time before I get the infection, and mine would usually be the worst.

Truth to be told, I avoided sharing food and drinks with everyone, and washed my hands each time I washed the kids soiled clothing or bums.

So when I started to get nauseous, with stomach cramping...I was like, ugh, is it my turn already. I was in the 2nd hospitalization phase and started to wonder if I need to ward myself soon haha.

I was tired, lying down for hours, taking naps but the nausea isn't going away.

Finally, I got sick of the nausea, and I decided to go to the toilet to attempt to vomit the nausea away. The vomit came fairly quickly, and I vomited twice in a span of 20 minutes.

Almost immediately I felt better, and I noticed that most of the vomit were foods eaten in the last 1-2 days.

I told my wife that maybe it's just indigestion, but she said nooooooo, rotavirus starts off that way....so I just waited for the vomiting and diarrhea.

It didn't come.

I continued to feel better and better and it seemed to be purely indigestion. I think I got indigestion because I'm eating too much and lying down after eating. In the last 5 months prior to hospitalization, I typically eat one (as ketogenic as possible) meal a day, but in hospital we were getting fed 3 whole meals a day, plus snacks.

Yes, it was my fault - I felt that I shouldnt waste the food so I ate as much as I can, ignoring the carbohydrates as much as possible.

That overloaded my stomach and there you go, indigestion.

My Poor Kids and Wife

But poor thing la the children, going to toilet multiple times to vomit or diarrhea, and being fatigued, with spikes of fever in between. They both had to be placed on intra-venous (IV) drip to hydrate them (as well as to administer IV medicines).

I believe my wife suffered the most, as she also caught the rotavirus bug and had many rounds of vomiting, diarrhea and being very tired due to that plus nausea (the worst). She still had to take care of the kids' meals, shower, bringing them to school and hospital and back.

So tough, and she didnt want to swap with me and asked me to stay in the hospital as she prefers to vomit/diarrhea at home and thinks also it'd be tough if she stays in hospital with the kids, what if they BOTH needed the toilet at the same time...which is a valid concern.

Finally wife's symptoms are also improving.

Sigh.

Thank God for good medical systems here in Singapore and that my AIA agent persuaded me to get good health insurance for myself and family. Without insurance, it'd be a lot harder and slower for good medical treatments.

As I write this, it's the fourth day post-discharge of the 2nd kid.

We can finally catch up on our rest and normalize our lives. Felt like the last 2+ weeks, our lives were in limbo as we were handling medical issues and resting the best we can.

Thank you Jesus, for your mercy and healing.
