Do The Right Thing Even When It’s Hard, Unpopular, Inconvenient Or Painful

This was first posted on 1st March 2020, porting from WordPress into Solo Build It.

I was kinda happy yesterday, and in the last 6 months – there has been more and more gentle validations and support that my move out of my previous business (that was acquired by a larger health company), that we need to do the right thing(s) anyway, even if it’s

  • hard
  • unpopular
  • inconvenient
  • painful

It may not be popular with the “so called in-crowd, or people with money, power or influence” but frankly, they’re not important to me.

I’m not here to please people who wants me to sing, dance, say and do what they want me to do. Which is what I’ve often felt where people want to “own” me and think they can get me to do whatever they want, at their convenience.

But, hey no thank you – you can go find other people who’d dance and sing for you, but certainly not me.

To me, God is more important, and following His teachings and precepts and His plans for me is more important than anything.

Even when I was offered a lot more money and more convenience –

  1. God is more important
  2. Doing the right thing is more important
  3. Not being with the people that’s not important for my future is more important

And…it’s so nice to hear that there are people like me out there, especially when he also told me that he had walked away from money, convenience and more, because in the end…

We just have to do the right thing.

And I’ll just keep doing the right things, and I am certain that God has so much more in store for me for the future.

Commentary

What's nice about porting these old written blog posts as I port from WordPress to Solo Build It is that I get to read and review and consider in retrospect and update on what has changed.

Today is 22nd August 2024, and as I read and re-read this post multiple times, what I wrote then, is still classic and applicable today. I will publish it again as it is.

Then, I decided to exit a place with easier money but it comes with integrity issues which was a huge disconnect for me. And though I can honestly say that my life would have been a lot more financially easy, I can only imagine that had I stayed, I wouldnt say the same for my integrity and character.

That was the right choice then, and it remains the right choice today - that company failed their claimed IPO, and the top 3 leaders are being charged by the government with corruption.

Right now looking back, it's easy to say "aha, I was right" - I know it was the right thing to do then, just that it was extremely unpopular and difficult simply because I had to start over from scratch, and that would mean a lot more effort to financially provide for my family, my wife, my kids.

It was a little challenging to have to be a little absent physically and sometimes mentally, as I have to rebuild over from zero.

To make matters worse, we had 2 other founders who also fell out with us as the original buyers gave us a lot of flak (even throwing in a pressurizing lawsuit to annoy and shake us all out).

Out of the 7, 2 dropped out and because we let them become the front and face of the business, they had all the patients and when they left, they took majority of the patients with them, leaving me with the rental and skeletons of a business.

I got to work and rebuild from ground up - I laid the foundations, removed the people who weren't a good fit with us, and did the sales and marketing and built the relationships.

For a grueling 18 months, and we had many occasions of thinking of closing shop and calling it a day, and finally, we turned the situation around.

We went from losses to breakeven. Today, we're floating a little better above breakeven, and I can imagine better times are coming as we keep iterating and improving.

Nothing has changed in the sense:

God is still the most important, and following His teachings and precepts and His plans for me is more important than anything.

Even when I was offered a lot more money and more convenience –

  1. God is more important
  2. Doing the right thing is more important
  3. Not being with the people that’s not important for my future is more important

And I’ll just keep doing the right things, and I am certain that God has so much more in store for me for the future.
