Letters to my children #00001: Be true to yourself.
My father must have told me this a million times.
Really.
Being true to yourself is profoundly simple, and it means to be honest, real and kind to yourself.
Some have come across being real means to be rude, obnoxious, unkind. Like the “if you cant take me at my worst, you dont deserve me.” I cannot agree with that, because that’s justifying rudeness and unkindness.
Being true to yourself is the ability to see yourself, your worries, your weaknesses, your hopes, your aspirations…so that you can do something with it.
Perhaps, to commit to change and growth, so that you can become the person you love.
Or so that you can build the kind of life you have been dreaming of, since you were a kid.
Whatever it is, being true to yourself is the beginning.
