Personal Excellence, Growth And Staying True To Good Values and Passive Income Is Key

…to good success and a good life.

Like a broken record, I’ve said it again and again:

who we become, is infinitely more important that what we can ever materially gain

I’m taking my time to ruminate, think and philosophize on what exactly is good success and a good life, and some of the few things that come to mind are:

  • personal excellence
  • growth
  • staying true to good values
  • passive income

Personal Excellence

Personal excellence is the dedication to doing the best we can, and to expand this, is to become the best we can be. To excel means to

  • have a higher standard and banner of quality and excellence and
  • also to do and keep doing the activities that maintain and sustain excellence

Growth is very linked to Personal Excellence, in the sense it is or can be seen as the process of personal excellence. If Personal Excellence is the goal and end point, then Growth is the ladder between the milestones.

An example is say, we want to be financially free, so that we can spend time on matters that truly matter (Personal Excellence Goal), then Growth will look at:

  • how much income is required for one to be financially free?
  • can we assume, it’s passive income that we require?
  • then if it’s passive income, how much? Perhaps setting a goal of $500/month passive income within the first year, and then $1000/month passive income in the next year and so on and so forth

Growth basically gives you the perspective that we can improve and keep refining and improving better and better.

Staying True To Good Values

Staying true to good values is very important. It is crucial; and in fact, to level this statement up will also include:

  1. Removing bad habits which reflect poor or evil values
  2. Adding good success habits which reflects or is good values
  3. Practicing these good success habits diligently and keep improving them

We all have bad habits. Some bad habits just affect us alone, such as procrastination or mindless eating – these by itself, is not good, but what is worse, are habits and actions that are downright evil, such as

  • directly stealing, defrauding, cheating, lying – things that people can see
  • indirectly stealing, backstabbing, character assassinating, spreading vile or evil rumours, corruption – where is harder to see
  • not doing anything and/or tolerating such bad practices and actions

I understand that often when we’re surviving, we may succumb to do all we can do to survive, but to survive at such a practice and a cost, it will eat away at one’s heart, mind and soul. Eventually, these people become corrupt inside.

Most of the time, people are not evil nor corrupt – it’s the tolerating and allowing and hanging out with such individuals and organizations that slowly chip away at one’s conscience and soul. It then becomes a habit and a new norm. In a large scale, it becomes a culture and a disease where a group of people internalize such bad practices and culture.

This is one of the reasons why I’m definitely happier is because I decide who I work with.

Regardless of how much money one offers me – my soul and culture isn’t for sale, not something I can compromise for a quick buck or benefit – at the end of the day, I will have to face Christ, and I want to be able to face Him with a clean conscience.

Yes, it’s a little inconvenient at times, but boy, am I so happy and clear minded and hearted.

Passive Income

Ah, this is one of my dilemma, which was “Should I Make All About Passive Income?” – I struggled with this for years and years, and in 2020, I’ve decided that The Passive Income Lifestyle and the pursuit of passive income is very important, but there are more important things in life.

In my humble opinion and conclusion, building multiple streams of reliable passive income is as important as the air we breathe, because if not, then we may be stuck having to work actively to put bread and bacon on the table. This is one of the reasons why I

  • set aside monthly income to reliable and resilient dividend stocks for ongoing dividend passive income
  • set aside monthly income for online businesses such as Amazon publishing and affiliate business

And it’d be an ongoing thing, as long as my core (90%+) in Phoenix Rehab keeps growing and stable.

That being said, no, there is absolutely nothing wrong with working, especially if one enjoys it, but what I’m highlighting is to build streams of passive income such that it frees us from having the need to work everyday, and can then move on to working for fun, or choosing work, life, relationships that bring us deep joy.

Kinda hard to do that when one is hands-to-mouth surviving, I know – so if you are struggling with money now, first, get a job. Then read my section on The Passive Income Lifestyle.

Conclusion: Choose Growth, Personal Excellence, Passive Income and Practice Good Success Habits/Values.

Definitely At A Happier Place Today

Hmm – today’s the 26th of October 2020.

Yes, despite the shit-show and shit-storm of a 2020 with COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic that’s been plaguing the entire world since last 2019 and still lasting till today with second, third and even fourth waves as of today (and possibly more waves to come)…

…yet I will say that I am definitely at a happier place today.

It’s weird, I don’t usually speak and am mindful about such matters on “happiness” (or maybe I just realized that I always have), but ever since I exited my sabbatical on 16th June 2019 (my 37th birthday) to join Phoenix Rehab Group as one of their principal hand therapists and CEO, it’s increasingly clear that my happiness level has grown at least 10X.

It’s also weird and seemingly counter-intuitive, as I consciously walked away from

  • a blank cheque offer (I could draw as much money as I want if I stayed)
  • a comfortable position, rank and mature business
  • with more options to “grow up the ranks”
  • and more

Yet, none of those offers fazes me, not even an iota, in the least.

I’m not in the least remotely interested in serving or working with individuals or organizations whose core values do not align with mine, regardless of how much money they can offer me. Unfortunately (or unfortunately?) I am not “buyable” – one cannot buy me with a price, no matter how big or amazing.

The the 18 months of sabbatical and the events I experienced in there confirmed that my sense and move is spot-on, with the kind of lies, deceit, rumour-mongering/burying and corruption that presented itself, be it behind closed doors or not.

Funnily enough, if we were to “look purely at material gains and losses”, yes I used much of my savings during my sabbatical but…after joining Phoenix Rehab

  • I replaced my income within 6 months
  • I doubled my income within 12 months
  • I’ve slowly starting building my dream team

…and there is so much more potential within and without, on top of the additional peace and happiness and “cleanliness” that I have obtained. It’s funny also, because I know of people who “stick around even bad places because they smell money there” – I can’t do that.

Good success to me is how and who I make money and value in a good and right way is very important to me, and is non-negotiable. Forever.

I have forgiven these events and activities, and will move on. I will continue to pave my path that God has called and given to me, and I will not stop, and I will not tolerate working with people or organizations whose values are dark and evil.

I am strong.

I am hopeful.

I am unstoppable.

May peace, hope, love and good success be the basis of your being, hope and future.

Writing And Focus Beyond 2020

It’s really tough and challenging at times for me, to decide what focus I want to write for See, right now, my awareness and perception is that

  1. I am a born-again Christian, and with Christ, I can do anything and overcome the world, for Jesus has overcome the world.
  2. I am born with certain talents, and have the ability and mindset to learn and nurture new skills and talents to improve my value and delivery to the world.
  3. I believe that we can all live harmoniously, properously, peacefully and happily with everyone in the world, in my idea of “naive idealism leadership
  4. I believe that we need to strive to keep leveling up in good ways, where we add value and positivity to the world. And of this, a segment will touch on The Passive Income Lifestyle, which is something that we all need to “unlock and achieve” to move onto the next stage in our lives; failing which, we will be constantly kept busy with putting food on the table, paying rent etc.

This is why a big portion of my life and thoughts in life and in was all about passive income and creating passive income streams. Don’t get me wrong – creating new passive income streams and growing them still gets me excited; just that passive income is important but it’s just the beginning, you get what I mean? And I can’t imagine “just” writing about business and passive income all my life – at the start, or a portion, certainly. But definitely not just about that forever – there is so much of life beyond passive income and money, and it’s important to overcome that stage.

I do not know how to amalgate all the culmination of my thoughts, hopes, aspirations, achievements and ideals yet, but I believe that I am slowly making sense of it all and getting there. It seems to be pointing towards “Good Success” and/or “Building & Living A Good Life” and “Passive Income Lifestyle”, but it’s hard to write a title first then fill in the details.

I also believe, at the same time, that as and when I get it, it will also “unlock” my ability to 10X to 100X+ my income as well because “everything will fall into place” once the framework and belief system all work synergistically together.

In a sense, I also want to be my legacy for my children (including my readers of today and in the future, who I term as my “pseudo-children” anyway, cos I’m wired and care that way. I would like it to be a resource and a guide on

  • how to live better
  • how to make better decisions
  • how to love
  • how to lead better and in love
  • and more

I know these can be “high level” and broad, and these needs to be “action-ified” into daily tasks, habits and systems to achieve and sustain them as well. So it’s “doing” ie habits and systems that are important, but equally as important are

  • being able to consciously think about these and improve a la “mindset, thinking, philosophy”
  • knowing what to prioritize on a la “wisdom”
  • doing these in good love, leadership etc (what’s the point of “getting” something in expense of hurting/destroying another/earth?)

In the end, who we become is more important infinitely as compared to what we can get materially.

These seem to be very broad, so this is what I’m going to do for now: I’m going to just write.

And write.

And write some more.

And then collectively group my writings.

Naive Idealism Leadership

I caught up with one of my investment banker client-turn-friend and we were chitchatting, and he shared with me the world of cutthroat finance and business, and people do it because it’s tolerated (even welcomed) as it’s a dog-eat-dog world, and it’s the survival of the fittest.

I shared how I disagreed with that approach and told him how I envisioned my ideal world will be, in the world of business, entrepreneurship and lifestyle, where there is zero tolerance for toxic and negative culture and politics – I find these cumbersome and limiting, and not very useful or functional at all; and more importantly, there is full transparency, fairness, sincerity, real love and leadership .

An example was a pure open revenue or profit-sharing approach, where people can work together to make more together, rather than try to cut each other down so that just a few individuals can eat or hoard more.

My approach and premise is very simple: let us eat together in love –

  • if there’s more, then we all eat more. If there’s less, we all eat less.
  • those that put in the work should earn/eat more

and that’s about it.

And that’s how I do most if not all of my businesses. I don’t believe in manipulation, coercion, cheating or lying to get ahead, despite having faced those situations so many time as of before. Perhaps that’s why I sleep like a baby with full and true confidence and peace, because I have long ago decided to do the right thing, no matter how unpopular it is.

And that’s when he called me naive. He said:

Nigel, in 2013 when I first met  you, I called you naive. Today, in 2020, I still believe you’re naive…but don’t change. There is that charm about you, and you’re not the only person like this in the world. There is a small minority of people like you, so stay the same, but be careful.

Nakama: Trust Your Team - Blindly - zCasting 3000

I don’t care if people call me naive – I will continue to embrace this “naive idealism” in all my leadership, management and business dealings and endeavours. It’s similar to a term that one may have chanced across, such as nakama leadership/comradeship as in One Piece Pirates manga, a la

  • Monkey D. Luffy
  • Whitebeard Edward Newgate

and also similar in a sense to SEMCO’s approach to business.

Of course, in any worlds, be it in One Piece and the real world, there are real scumbags and evildoers as well with their own perverse sense of justice and dog-eat-dog approach – I reject that approach even till today, and that’s why I am ultra selective on who I work with and who I allow into my life.

My friend then smiled, and then proceeded to tell me to consider a specific business venture that he’d be happy to fund.

Interesting times – as we move into the end of 2020, I am still confident and of the belief that being very selective with who we work with and being true to good and God will bring us closer and higher to our destinies, moving forward.
